Good medal haul for Richmond at Nottingham

RICHMOND Canoe Club paddlers claimed 11 medals at the most recent National Sprint Regatta in Nottingham.

Gavin Turrell claimed second spot in the elite men's 200-metre event in a time of 39 seconds, 23 hundredths. Turrell also performed well in the doubles event over the same distance, winning silver with Conrad Passmore in 36.17. Capping a good day for the Richmond duo, Passmore and Turrell paddled to victory in the elite 200-metre men's fours event in 34.38, sharing a boat with two Chelmsford athletes.

There was gold for Richmond's Sam Wetherall in the girls' fours sprint over 1,000 metres. Comprising paddlers from four different clubs, Wetherall's crew completed the distance in 4 minutes, 3 seconds, 8 hundredths. In second place was another multi-club quartet, including Sam's sister Kim Wetherall, which finished in 4:07.14. Both Wetheralls performed well in their respective 500-metre fours finals too, with Sam Wetherall's crew claiming silver in the girls' A race and Kim Wetherall's crew gold in the girls' B event.

Richmond's boys also performed well, with the best result going to the Oliver Isbell and Gvidas Papreckis combination, who won silver in the 500-metre boys' C doubles final.

Other Richmond success included first place for Anton Fatti in the 1000-metre mens' C singles sprint and silver for Rupert Elkington-Cole in the mens' D singles event over the same distance.
