Eleven young canoeists from Richmond paddled thirteen miles on Saturday Eleven young canoeists from Richmond paddled thirteen miles on Saturday to raise funds to save their canoe club.
The youngsters, aged from 11 to 16 paddled from Elmbridge Canoe Club near Shepperton to Richmond, and raised £1000 towards the cost of saving their clubhouse.
The Mayor of Richmond, Councillor Douglas Orchard, who welcomed the children to Richmond at the end of their paddle said "I'm really pleased that these young people are getting out and doing something to help their community. They should be congratulated for this magnificent effort."
The Commodore of Richmond Canoe Club, Sean Martin said "As a racing canoe club, we have been providing a valuable service to local people for more than 50 years. As well as training a number of competitors in the Olympic Games and World Championships, the club also provides high quality training for adults and young people who just want to get fit and have some fun.
We need to protect our position on the river at Richmond for future generations of young people and these young members are helping us do that. I'm really proud of all of them.
Club Coach Liz Greasby said "This is the furthest most of these youngsters have ever canoed. They enjoyed the paddle and should be proud of what they have achieved."
