Richmond Sprints 24 March 2006

Because of difficulties in confirming the venue for the sprints, as well as extensive building work at the Club, we have decided to postpone the Richmond Sprints until later in the year.

We are hoping to find a date and venue suitable for all and intend to run the regatta at Easter next year.

Apologies for the inconvenience.

Fundraising Update 24 March 2006

We're pleased to announce that in addition to the Sport England grant of ?135,000 announced at the AGM, we have been awarded a grant of ?25,000 by the SITA Trust (Part of the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme).

Adding this grant we now have around ?190,000 secured towards the refurbishment project, subject to us ensuring that we meet the requirements of these funding bodies. These two awards come on top of the two already given us by our local charities, Hampton Fuel Allotment Charity and Richmond Parish Lands.?There are also the 40 or so club members to thank for their generous support to our own Gift Aid Scheme.

Thanks to a lot of hard work by a number of the Committee we are well on our way.?Refurbishment will commence as soon as we are in a position to do so (this is subject to the works going on above us ? as you can see from the roadside picture, it?s starting to look like a building again, and now the scaffolding has been removed), and although there are still masses of decisions to be made (not least what colour tiles to have) we are really hoping we will all be back in our home by late summer.

We are still around ?30,000 short of the eventual target we need, to enable both the club's interior to be done and get the balcony pretty much rebuilt. If you have not yet completed a Gift Aid form and given even a small amount to help, please do so. Really even ?25 from the rest of the club members will make a huge difference - you can download the Gift Aid Form here - where you'll find a copy of the fundraising FAQs too.

Devizes Westminster Support 24 March 2006

With the Easter weekend jaunt of Devizes Westminster approaching rapidly, there's the annual scrabble for support crews. Tony and partner are looking for a support crew - a total of four people.

Being part of a support crew is a memorable experience, and is essential for the paddlers. It's a good combination of challenging and straightforward. And if you're thinking of doing the event next year, it is a very good way of understanding the demands of the event.

If you're just one person, a couple or a group and available, get in touch with Tony (found paddling on Saturday's and most mornings this close to Easter) either at the club or by email.

Greening the Thames 24 March 2006

The Arcadia Group, who are redeveloping the Thameside around Richmond, have a couple of planting dates planned at Bridge House Gardens.

If you're interested - or know someone who might be - the details for planting are:

Sunday 9th April 10.00am - 1.00pm
Saturday 29th April 9.30am - 12.30pm

See the map for precise details.

Let Tasha Hunter know if you can attend so gloves and tools can be arranged.

Flatmate Required 15 March 2006
Flatshare available to rent, double room in flat on top of Richmond Hill. Fantastic location, close to all facilities, 5 minutes walk to park and river. Ten minutes to town and station. Available in May. £550 pcm, plus share of bills. Call Andy on 07713 175838.
PARKING ON THE RAMP 13 March 2006
It is essential that we stop the recent practice of parking on the ramp down into the car park. The ramp is the official fire access route for a fire engine to reach a fire within Blade House. We are leaving ourselves wide open for prosecution by the LFB if we continue.

Tubes and testing - cholesterol, blood pressure and fitness testing

8 March 2006

University of Brunel, School of Sport and Education is offering free cholesterol, blood pressure and fitness testing to non-smoking men aged 35-45 years.

The service is part of a study designed to compare heart disease risk factors in habitual exercisers and sedentary men. Participation is voluntary and requires only three visits to the Exercise Physiology Laboratory in the Heinz Wolff Building (formerly the Science Building) on the Uxbridge Campus.

The added bonus is that you get to find out a lot more about your body completely free (well financially anyway).

If you, or anybody you know, would like to take part in the study, click here for more information. Full contact details are on the Brunel website and more information about the test here.

Thameside 1 ? Race Report 5 March 2006

Seventeen paddlers braved the cold last week to race Thameside 1 from Aldermaston to Reading - a distance of 13 miles with 8 portages. The race, which starts on the Kennet and Avon canal and then onto the Thames for the last couple of miles, is part of the preparatory series of races leading upto DW.

Peter Barnes’ troops were out in force in K2, all with credible results, especially as this was a first race for a couple of them. Fletcher/Fletcher were the highest placed K2 from Richmond, finishing 9th (2:04:50), followed by Luck/Mounde in 10th (2:06:23), and then Laxton/Betteridge and Readman/Gow finishing 12 & 13 with the times of 2:09:55 and 2:10:22 respectively. Battling away to finish 16th was Berry/McDonald (2:26:10) with Sonia Marquardt and Caroline Shortt finishing in a time of 2:40:54, despite having navigational issues at portages!

Three Richmond paddlers, decided to try their luck in K1. Henry Hendron the quickest Richmond paddler of the day, finished 2nd in the Men's senior race in 1:41:03, a time which put him 3rd fastest K1 paddler of the race. Mike Pigott, trailed in at a respectable 6th with a time of 2:02:34, while Rait Harnet in the K1 Vet class came 11th with a time of 2:26:28.

The conditions were slow this year, not helped by the cold and wind, but despite this, all Richmond paddlers who made the effort to represent the club at this race, had a good challenging paddle. The next Thameside Race is on Sunday 12 March, starting at Reading, finishing at Marlow.

It’s a mass start and well worth attending.
