Richmond Victory at Reading K4s |
31 July 2006 |
Richmond saw success in the recent Reading K4 race, winning the Men's B race outright, as well as having the fastest race time of the day, beating the time of the Elmbidge winners in the A race.
The triumphant Richmond crew of French Paul, Henry Hendron, Nick Fay and Ross Sabberton (Royal, but is starting to see the light!), stormed in with a time of 36:52, some two minutes ahead of the Elmbridge boats in the elite A race.
Elsewhere in the race, Cas joined forces (or is that switched sides!) with a Reading CC boat, to finish second to the winning Richmond boat.
Further down the field, Paul Wells’ boat, consisting of Paul, Pirran Shelley, Stu Cliften and Graham O’Regan, had a good start, but lost the lead group near the end on a turn which did away with their steering! They finished 4th, with a time of 39:30.
This is the second time in a row that Richmond have triumphed at the Reading K4. In last October's K4 race at Reading, Richmond were out in the lead again taking gold in the 10K amongst fierce competition.
I am sure Richmond will be out in force at Octobers Reading K4, to bag their third consecutive gold!

Paddling alongside Lewis Gordan Pugh |
30 July 2006 |
There's an emerging plan to paddle down the Thames from Teddington to Richmond Bridge with Lewis Gordan Pugh as he aims to swim the length of the Thames - see below.
On the current schedule, it looks like it'll be Tuesday afternoon. And the aim of this stunt - pure and simple, to get our superb club in the local paper.
If you're available and interested, drop Peter an email.

Devize Westminster Seminars |
30 July 2006 |
Just in case you were enjoying a relaxing summer, those pesky paddlers down at Marsport have decided to remind us of next Easter, Devizes Westminster and their way of "making Easter less traumatic."
If you're thinking about "doing" DW next week, Marsport have a number free seminars on 30th September and 9th December about how to complete the event.
Of course, Richmond have a mighty fine reputation of getting people through the race.

Thames Endurance Swim |
28 July 2006 |
If you're out paddling this weekend, keep an eye out for someone swimming. Long distance swimmer Lewis Gordan Pugh is swimming the entire length of the Thames. Today, he's at Hurley, between Henley and Windsor, but is intending to be in Southend on Tuesday. That would put him passing through Richmond on Sunday or probably Monday.
Swim details with a live map (he's currently resting on an island apparently) at www.lewispugh.com/thames/thames_about.html

Richmond Medal Haul at Nottingham Nationals |
26 July 2006 |
Richmond won 24 medals at the National Championships in Nottingham at the weekend - an impressive haul. This despite a storm which caused racing to be halted. Attached are the results as far as I can remember. Neil has lots of photos - mug shots and action shots.
A special commendation is to be made to Stuart who, during a lengthy stop on the M1 because of a serious accident ran from the well stocked camper, between the stationary traffic jam, to his near starving team-mates in a less well prepared vehicle with supplies to keep them going. Much appreciated! (not many people go jogging on the M1!)
And of course many thanks to Trevor for this report and pulling it all together (and getting that 3rd in the Masters A).

RCC Qualify for Hasler Finals |
20 July 2006 |
Richmond Canoe Club has qualified to take part in the national Hasler Marathon Final. Thank you and congratulations to all the paddlers who made the effort to attend races over the last year and contribute to Richmond's status as a racing club!
All qualified individual paddlers, please block off Sunday 17 September NOW in your calendar for participation at the Final at Bedford. We will start collating entries and will assume that if you have qualified you will be at the final - please let me know if that is not the case.
You need to qualify individually to participate in the final - to do this you need to have done three races in a K1 (if you are racing in a K1) or in a K2 (if you are racing in a K2). If you have not yet qualified then you can still do so at a number of Hasler races through the course of August. This will be especially relevant to the paddlers who have completed two races and need only one more to qualify. The Hasler qualification lists which are up in the club will be updated and sent out again soon - together with details of outstanding qualification races.
Individual paddler's BCU membership is crucial to the club's recognition as a competitive organisation - if only because administratively all results are hung on the hook of a BCU affiliation. Please do join the BCU so that if you decide to race, then you will receive recognition and the club will too.
For those who want to see how close it was here's the London & SE Region points table.
All gear up for 17 September in Bedford!

RCC Tour Group - River Arun - Sun 30th July |
18 July 2006 |
The RCC tour group continues to seek out new and challenging stretches of water. The next tour, on Sunday 30th July, will be a paddle along the River Arun. Described in "One Hundred Best Paddles in England" (BCU) as " flowing through varied and attractive scenery towards and through the South Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty".
The tour will start from Pulborough, a small town about 13 mile north of Arundel and will reuqire an early start - as with Chichester Harbour - from Richmond Canoe Club because of the travel distance. If you would like to atttend, but may have difficulty making an early start because of travel arrangements, family commitments or other constraints please discuss let us know. As in previous trips we will be sharing transport and participants will be asked for a contribution toward petrol, parking and other costs.
The number who can attend will depend on the number of roof racks and v-bars available. So get your name down early. If we are oversubscribed, we may have to set up a reserve list.
If you would like to attend let us know as soon as possible.
The Tour Team
aka Jim Mullany, Steve Ogin, Sarah Jefferson, Marie-Do Sanders, Peter Barnes.

Summer of Sport Officially Over |
3 July 2006 |
England out due to Wayne trying out country dancing steps on Carvalho and that poor, misunderstood winker Cristiano Ronaldo. Murray puts us out of our Wimbledon misery before hope gets out of hand.
No pressure, but Lizzie better do well at the second Marathon World Cup in Trencin, Slovakia this weekend.
Wake me up when September comes.
