Halloween Party - New Photos !!

01/11/2003

Wow, what a night!!!!! Thank you all for your support in making the party on Saturday 1st November a big success! It was a first class experience in everyway. It was a big buzz to see everybody on the dance floor enjoying the music and having fun! There seemed to be a very warm atmosphere where everybody felt included. This made all the effort of organising the event worth while.

200 Metre Sprint Masterclass - Original Source

29/11/2003

On Saturday the 29th the first 200 Metre Masterclass was held at Richmond Canoe Club, Richmond, Surrey.

The class was run by Gavin Turrell (the current British 200 Metre Champion along with Steve Tingay in the K2) and the objective of the day was to give the group a general flavour of what 200 metre racing is all about.

20 athletes of varying abilities attended. Some just wanted to improve their starts in marathons, whilst others fancied a go at the 200's next season.

A classroom introduction started the 3 hour experience. Padders were introduced and a high level overview of 200 metre training and racing was given. The group then proceeded onto the water for a 1 hour session.

Gavin Turrell, performed demonstration starts and burns and the group completed 8 such efforts, getting a good feel for what it is like to do a flat out sprint ! The water session finished with a Mass Start 200 metre race.

The group then came off the water and returned to the gym where the highlights from the 200 metre racing at Gainsville were viewed. It was certainly inspiring to see such greats as Vince Fehvervari, Ronald Rauhe and Rachel Train in action ! Finally there was a questions and answers session, a good opportunity for the group to reflect on the course content and their experience.

It was a successful day by all accounts and despite the evil weather conditions the group survived the session well.

Further masterclasses are planned at Richmond Canoe club in the future with such stars as Ivan Lawler and Tricia Davey partaking!

Thames Draw-Off - Photos of the River at low tide

08/11/2003 - 29/11/2003

The winter draw-off was carried off as usual, and so a few intrepid (read crazy) members of the club were wading around in the Thames on Saturday evening making sure that the pontoon did not strike the riverbed and settled level (well sort of level).
1st Hare & Hound

02/11/2003

A small group of stalwarts met up on the very rainy and cold Sunday morning following the Halloween Party. Putting hangovers to one side, and sheepishly ignoring promises made the night before about paddling the race in costume, the adventureres made their way to Guildford, home of the Wey Canoe Club and host to that all improtant series of events known as the Hare and Hounds.

The winner of this time trial is the person(s) who improve the most over the four races. Our motley crew presented themselves and their hangovers at check in. Craig (26) was put down as a veteran male (35), and spent the next four hours asking us whether we really thought he looked that old.

A bottle of wine is on offer to the first Richmond crew to beat the 50 minute mark. This bottle was also on offer in 2002, but Tim and Peter sportingly finished their last race in 50:01, so the (now) vintage bottle has rolled over into 2003.

Mindful of their hangovers, the Richmond crews are careful to keep their times in the 50 - 60minute range, and the bottle of wine survives to another race.

Most surprised paddler - Ollie, who was overtaken no less than 4 times by Peter and Tim (usual excuse, rudder failure). They should really take it up with the harbourmasters.....
