Richmond took a big team of 46 paddlers to race at Wey last Sunday but were beaten to the first place in the Hasler competition by Wey themselves. This was a good result given the bulk of the team were racing in higher divisions for the first time having been promoted recently. The narrow windy river made a nice change from the Thames but with well over 200 racers on the water conditions were very bumpy.
Fred S was the only Richmond winner in the divisional races, showing his consistent winter training has paid off with a 1st place in division 4 and a promotion as well. Marko finished as fastest C1 of the day in 8th place in this race. Richmond’s very youngest paddlers also provided some wins in the lightning category with Zoe and Francis winning U10 girls and boys respectively, and Joe 2nd in U12 boys. There were 3rd places for rowing convert Matthew in a big division 7 field and also the Herwangers in division 6 K2.
There was a distinct lack of numbers for Richmond in the higher divisions but Nick had a good race in division 2, finishing 5th in a large field. Our other division 2 and 3 competitors didn’t fare quite so well but have no doubt learnt their respective lessons from the race (mainly don’t capsize).
On the four mile course there was a big Richmond turnout from juniors and newer seniors, and promotions for Ewan (to division 8), and Annabel & John R (to division 7).
Next regional Hasler is Hastings on Sunday 19th May. Pre-entries as normal to Will.
